I love engagement sessions! They allow time for me to get to know my couples before the wedding day and help them get comfortable in front of the camera. It is also a time to celebrate and capture how sweet and fleeting the season of engagement truly is.
One of the most common questions I get while planning engagement shoots is in regards to planning outfits. There are some helpful tips I have collected over the years that can assist in the planning process. Here is also a link to a Pinterest board that I work to keep updated with inspiration.
I recommend bringing 2-3 outfits to your engagement session and making at least one of them dressier.
- Choose pieces you feel confident and comfortable in. It is important that you choose clothing pieces that you will feel great in! The better you feel, the better you will look, and the more fun you will have. Buying new outfits for your engagement shoot is fun, but you might also have some great pieces in your closet that you love and feel confident in!
2. Colors do make a difference! Soft and neutral colors help to create a more romantic feel in your photographs. Bright and bold colors are a little more playful. I recommend staying away from red or bright pink or orange as those colors are reflective and can shine unwanted colors on your skin.
3. No one regrets a jean look! If you plan to do one more casual outfit, jeans are always a good decision.
4. Don’t be afraid to set the scene! Bring some bubbly or picnic supplies. I love when my clients want to create a scene that is meaningful or fun for them. Picnic supplies, champagne, a charcuterie board, or a guitar- don’t be afraid to personalize it for yourself!
5. Long flowy dresses look great on everyone. Long flowy dresses are slimming and usually have a beautiful, romantic movement to them. They are a great option and usually end up being one of my client’s favorite outfits.
You can never go wrong with dressing up. Rent the Runway is another great option as you don’t have to keep that dress you might never wear again. They have many beautiful show-stopping and designer pieces that would look incredible in your engagement photos. You simply rent the outfit(s) for a couple of days and mail it back.
